LEADING A PURPOSE DRIVEN TEAM: DISCOVER YOUR OWN PURPOSE

SCRIPTURE: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10 KJV)

QUOTE: “The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you, frees you, challenges you, or gives you a sense of meaning, joy, or passion.”  – Terry Orlick

NOTE:

The first step in leading a purpose driven team is to discover what your own purpose is. This is very vital as you can’t give what you don’t have. You need to spend time reflecting on your values, passions and skills to understand what you were put on this earth to do. This discovery does not only help you select the right people, it sets the tone for leading them rightly, ensuring they find purpose and are driven by it. Discovering your own purpose helps you stay focused on the goal; makes you demand what is rewarding for the whole team and informs your decisions and actions. To lead a purpose driven team, finding yourself is a must!

ILLUSTRATION:

Mr. Schultz’s purpose was to create a company that was about more than just selling, but about creating a “third place” where people could gather, connect, and feel a sense of community. With this purpose, he decided to start his career at Starbucks as a marketing director, but eventually left the company to start his own coffee business because the company did not buy his ideas initially and he wasn’t comfortable working where he wasn’t fulfilled. However, when Starbucks began to struggle, Schultz was asked to come back as CEO to turn the company around with his initial ideas. He did so by refocusing the company’s purpose from just selling to creating a “third place.” Under Schultz’s leadership, Starbucks became known for its commitment to creating a sense of community in its stores, through initiatives such as free Wi-Fi, live music, and community events. Schultz also prioritized employee engagement and well-being, introducing comprehensive health benefits and stock options for all employees. Schultz’s purpose-driven leadership not only helped Starbucks recover from its struggles, but also propelled the company to become one of the most successful and beloved brands in the world. By tapping from his personal purpose, he was able to reposition the purpose of the company. He was also able to inspire and motivate his team to achieve great things.

REFLECTION:

  1. Have you discovered yourself?
  2. How will this discovery help transform your team into a purpose driven team?
